About this role
The University of Iowa Health Care Downtown Campus Department of Security is seeking a Hospital Security Officer to provide the highest quality of public safety, protecting life and property across the medical center. This 60% weekend shift role is based at the 194-bed Downtown Campus in Iowa City, which became part of Iowa's only comprehensive academic health system in 2024.
Officers perform security services including electronic surveillance, patrol of the campus, and enforcement of hospital policies and procedures. They coordinate responses to a wide range of potential problems and emergencies for patients, employees, and visitors, from routine lockouts to duress alarms and hazardous materials decontamination.
This role works closely with the Environment of Care committee to establish a safe environment of care, ensuring a multi-disciplinary approach to security and safety. Officers also participate in employee awareness and education initiatives, contributing to a culture of preparedness across the hospital.

Requirements
- Ability to perform security services including electronic surveillance and campus patrol
- Capability to enforce policies and procedures and coordinate response to potential problems and emergencies
- Basic understanding of key management programming
- Ability to prepare daily reports of shift activity and provide written communication to other safety and security officers
- Competence in receiving found property, inventorying, and entering into the lost and found system
- Ability to provide emergency response including disaster, fire, tornado, duress alarms, hazardous materials decontamination, infant abduction, bomb threat, and non-violent crisis intervention
Responsibilities
- Conduct investigations of incidents and prepare clear, accurate reports
- Enforce hospital regulations, guidelines, and policies as needed
- Respond to routine and emergency calls for service, including disasters, fire, tornado, duress alarms, hazardous materials decontamination, infant abductions, bomb threats, and non-violent crisis intervention
- Patrol assigned areas to ensure personal, building, and equipment security
- Perform inspections of fire extinguishers, emergency lights, exit lights, sprinkler flow and tampers, and conduct fire drills and hazard surveillance
- Provide information, assistance, escort services, lockouts, and jump starts to patients, visitors, and employees
- Provide traffic control and enforcement measures on all hospital-owned or operated property
- Transfer deposits between the hospital and financial institutions to maintain security of funds
