About this role

The Security Officer and K9 provide and maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, employees, and volunteers. This position assists in security response efforts, assigned service duties, and routinely patrols all buildings and grounds. Applicants must possess a strong interest in working with K9s in public safety and submit to fingerprinting for a background check.

The K9 team patrols facilities and grounds to maintain safety while assisting in security responses and activities for patients, visitors, employees, and volunteers. The K9 Officer provides 24/7 care for the K9, including feeding, exercising, grooming, medical care, kennel cleaning, and maintaining a healthy home environment. Yearly veterinary exams are scheduled, and immediate treatment is ensured for any sickness or injury.

Ensure the K9’s fitness through regular training and exercise for readiness levels. Participate in joint K9 events with local law enforcement agencies. Maintain the K9’s safety on and off-duty, using best judgment during service calls to protect wellbeing.

The K9 is trained in scent detection, area searches, and de-escalation as a psychological deterrent. Exposure occurs in various Guthrie environments for screening persons and areas for hazardous items, protecting against crime, and handling disruptive individuals. Regularly interact with patients, visitors, and staff in a healthcare setting.

Requirements

  • 1+ years in institutional security, preferably in a health care facility
  • Preferred experience as an investigator in law enforcement or security
  • Working knowledge of hospital departmental functions
  • Working knowledge of state and federal security regulations affecting hospitals
  • Experienced in effectively interacting with people
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • PA Security Guard Registration and NYS Security Guard License (Guthrie assistance provided)
  • K9 Handling Certificate, CPR, and CPI certifications (training provided)
