About this role

This position interacts with visitors in a positive and welcoming manner while providing directions and information related to the Museum collection and public programs. Guards safeguard visitors, staff, and the Museum's assets while communicating policies that protect the collection from damage.

Daily work includes conducting opening and closing procedures with rooftop and gallery inspections, performing regular patrols, and monitoring CCTV cameras. Guards check packages, operate elevators when required, and complete daily logs and security reports.

The role is part of the Museum's fire safety program and requires availability for 24/7/365 coverage upon reopening. Guards report safety conditions, prevent disorder and overcrowding, and respond to emergency incidents including medical issues and visitor complaints.

Team members receive training in de-escalation, crowd control, conflict resolution, and cultural sensitivity. The environment supports strong organizational and planning skills within a museum setting focused on art and Black culture.

Requirements

New York State Guard certificate
CPR/AED/FSD and/or Fire Guard certification preferred
Minimum of two-year security guard work or customer service experience
Knowledge of video surveillance systems, silent alarms, and access control a plus
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong organizational and planning skills

Responsibilities

Conduct opening and closing procedures including inspection of rooftop and assigned galleries
Perform regular patrols of assigned area and report issues to the supervisor
Ensure staff, visitors, and contractors adhere to security rules to prevent theft, fire, and damage
Monitor CCTV cameras and operate elevators when required
Check packages of persons entering and leaving the Museum
Complete daily logs and other security reports as required
Report and respond to emergency incidents including medical emergencies and visitor complaints
