About this role

Under the direction of the security supervisor, this officer protects the life and property of all persons on Baystate Health property, ensuring consistent and safe service delivery throughout the medical center and hospital.

The officer patrols buildings and grounds, monitors surveillance cameras, and enforces the access control program. They inspect doors and windows for security, maintain hospital vehicles, and respond to emergency codes and calls for assistance.

Working within a healthcare security team, the officer interacts with staff, patients, visitors, and clinicians to de-escalate emotionally distressed persons and maintain a safe environment. They assist with traffic control during emergencies and conduct preliminary investigations.

This role offers opportunities to develop decision-making skills under general instruction, handling problems of moderate complexity. Officers may receive special assignments from the security supervisor, building expertise in hospital security operations.

Requirements

  • Ability to patrol and inspect facility for security, health, and safety hazards and take corrective actions.
  • Skill in monitoring surveillance systems and reporting suspicious activities accurately.
  • Competence in enforcing access control procedures and issuing visitor badges in accordance with policy.
  • Capability to respond to emergency codes and operate fire equipment following department procedures.
  • Experience in de-escalating emotionally distressed individuals who may pose a safety risk to themselves or others.
  • Ability to conduct preliminary investigations and document incidents in written reports.
  • Flexibility to work under general instruction and make decisions with some interpretation.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods while maintaining alertness.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol hospital buildings and grounds to deter loss and prevent illegal entry by unauthorized individuals.
  • Monitor surveillance cameras and report suspicious activities to maintain a secure environment.
  • Enforce the access control program by issuing visitor badges, identifying persons without identification, and securing doors and windows.
  • Respond to calls for service, alarms, and emergency code activation, rendering aid and de-escalating emotionally distressed persons who may pose a safety risk.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations and prepare reports on unusual occurrences, property damage, thefts, and all suspicious activities.
  • Provide escorts for patients, visitors, employees, and students as needed.
  • Assist in traffic control during fire and other emergent situations, keeping fire lanes clear of traffic.
  • Perform special assignments as directed by the Security Supervisor.
