About this role
The Associate Protection Officer reports to the Protection Officer or Senior Protection Officer and may supervise protection staff including community-based protection, registration, resettlement and education. The role provides functional protection guidance on statelessness, Global Compact on Refugees commitments, age, gender and diversity matters.
Day-to-day work involves coordinating timely protection responses for forcibly displaced and stateless persons while mainstreaming protection methodologies across all sectors. The incumbent supervises protection standards and operational procedures in line with international standards and integrates protection safeguards into programme design.
The position requires building effective interfaces with communities of concern, authorities, protection partners and other stakeholders. It contributes to a comprehensive protection strategy and represents the organization externally on protection doctrine and policy as guided by the supervisor.
Staff ensure forcibly displaced and stateless persons are meaningfully engaged in decisions affecting them and support programme adaptations influenced by community priorities and capacities. All duties are performed within UNHCR's regulatory framework and accountability structures.
Requirements
- Knowledge of statelessness, Global Compact on Refugees commitments and age, gender, diversity principles
- Experience with community-based protection, child protection, gender-based violence prevention and response
- Understanding of registration, asylum and refugee status determination, resettlement and local integration processes
- Ability to integrate human rights standards and engage with national legislation and judicial processes
- Experience in situations of internal displacement and mixed movement responses

- Coordinate quality, timely and effective protection responses ensuring operational responses mainstream protection methodologies and integrate safeguards
- Supervise protection standards, operational procedures and practices in protection delivery in line with international standards
- Contribute to the design of a comprehensive protection strategy and represent the organization externally on protection doctrine and policy
- Build and maintain effective interfaces with communities of concern, authorities, protection and assistance partners and broader stakeholders
