About this role
Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks a part-time Museum Security Officer to create a positive and welcoming experience by assisting visitors, while ensuring the safety and security of the Museum’s property through continuous patrols of the premises. The RISD Museum is one of the three largest university art museums in the United States, committed to connecting a diverse public with art and design from the ancient past to the present day.
In this role, you will conduct continuous tours throughout the Museum, informing visitors of museum rules and ensuring appropriate conduct and activity. You will also provide protection for the collection by communicating collection safety rules, reporting missing or damaged artwork immediately, and escorting contractors working within the Museum to ensure they follow safety and security guidelines.
The Museum Security Office is an essential part of museum operations, and you will work within a unionized environment as part of the Museum Guards Association. The team is dedicated to advancing principles of social equity and inclusion, environmental and climate justice, and equal access to resources and opportunities.
You will attend required training, some of which may occur outside of regularly scheduled hours, and actively engage in on-the-job learning opportunities to maintain knowledge of policies and procedures. This part-time position offers a consistent weekly schedule of 20–25 hours, 12 months per year.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED required
- Strong communication skills and dependability
- Demonstrated customer service skills with a minimum of one year customer service experience in a service-oriented environment
- Previous security or related work experience preferred
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Ability to complete written reports and follow standard operating procedures
- Ability to interact with visitors in a courteous and respectful manner while ensuring the safety of patrons and art
- Required to obtain a CPR/AED course completion through training provided by the Museum
Responsibilities
- Provide routine protection of galleries, visitors, and school tour groups by making continuous tours throughout the Museum
- Inform visitors of museum rules and ensure appropriate conduct and activity
- Utilize knowledge of RISD Museum and RISD community to answer routine customer service questions and visitor inquiries regarding events, exhibitions, and gallery locations
- Provide protection for the collection by communicating collection safety rules to visitors and report missing or damaged artwork immediately
- Escort contractors working within the Museum to ensure they operate within appropriate safety and security guidelines
- Provide initial response and assistance during emergency incidents, including fire, medical, and security situations
- Direct visitors during evacuations, implement shelter-in-place rules, and call for assistance immediately
- Attend required training and actively engage in on-the-job learning opportunities to maintain knowledge of policies and procedures
