Selkirk Mental Health Centre (SMHC) Security Services is built around a recovery model that encourages building relationships with patients, staff, and the public. The 252-bed facility provides specialized inpatient mental health and acquired brain injury treatment services to residents of Manitoba and Nunavut.

The security officer must have the skills and ability to deal with a variety of situations and interact with employees, patients, public, and management. This position requires working 12-hour shifts including days, evenings, nights, and weekends. The grounds are open and accessible, sometimes posing risks like videotaping and contraband.

SMHC has five specialized patient programs: Acute, Geriatric, Rehabilitation, Forensic, and Acquired Brain Injury. These are delivered on a campus-like setting with several buildings, plus three offsite community group homes in Selkirk. The facility employs over 700 staff in various roles.

The security officer works in a recovery-focused environment where building relationships with patients, staff, and the public is central. This casual position provides exposure to diverse security challenges within a specialized healthcare setting. The role offers meaningful work in a supportive environment.

Requirements

  • Ability to deal with a variety of situations and interact effectively with employees, patients, public, and management.
  • Willingness to work rotating 12-hour shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong observation and situational awareness skills to identify and address potential risks.
  • Ability to build relationships in a recovery-based environment.
  • Valid provincial security license or ability to obtain.
  • Completion of non-violent crisis intervention training or equivalent.
  • Physical fitness to patrol grounds and respond to incidents.

Responsibilities

  • Provide security services at Selkirk Mental Health Centre across its campus and offsite group homes.
  • Deal with a variety of situations and interact with employees, patients, public, and management.
  • Work rotating 12-hour shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Address risks such as videotaping patients, soliciting drugs, providing contraband, and vandalizing grounds and buildings.
  • Build relationships with patients, staff, and the public in a recovery-focused environment.
  • Monitor open grounds and multiple buildings on a campus-like setting.
  • Respond to incidents and maintain safety across the facility.
