About this role

The hospital Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, staff, and hospital property. This role involves proactive patrol, incident response, access control, and collaboration with clinical staff and emergency responders.

Conduct routine and random patrols to deter and detect unsafe or suspicious activity. Respond promptly to security incidents, alarms, emergencies, and requests for assistance, using de-escalation techniques to manage disruptive situations.

Collaborate with hospital leadership, clinical staff, and local law enforcement as needed. Exercise sound judgment and professionalism in a fast-paced healthcare environment, requiring effective communication and a customer service mindset.

Participate in required training, drills, and continuing education to stay current with best practices. This role offers the chance to develop skills in healthcare security and behavioral health management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in security, public safety, hospital, healthcare, or behavioral health environment.
  • CPR/BLS certification through AHA or American Red Cross required or must be obtained within 90 days.
  • AVADE certification required or must be obtained within 30 days.
  • Active driver’s license required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong observational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safety and security throughout hospital buildings, grounds, and parking areas.
  • Conduct routine and random patrols to deter and detect unsafe or suspicious activity.
  • Respond promptly to security incidents, alarms, emergencies, and requests for assistance.
  • De-escalate disruptive situations involving patients, visitors, or staff using approved techniques.
  • Assist with behavioral health or combative patient situations in accordance with hospital policy and training.
  • Control access to restricted areas and verify identification as required.
  • Monitor security systems, including cameras, alarms, and access control systems.
  • Accurately document incidents, observations, and actions taken in written reports.
